Catharine Place was laid out by John Wood the Younger between 1777 and 1784. The garden at its heart was originally a paved area for resting sedan chairs, the Georgian equivalent of a taxi rank. Now it is a rare private sanctuary, dedicated to the Bath civilians who lost their lives during the Baedeker Blitz of April 1942.
